Lancaster UN Pail Business is Moving to CSC

Dear Lancaster Customer,

As you know, Cleveland Steel Container acquired Lancaster Container in September 2024. Since then, the Cleveland Steel team has been minimally involved in Lancaster’s manufacturing, sales, and pail products as we strive to maintain the Lancaster brand identity.

Lancaster’s main product is producing non-regulated steel pails for roof coatings, fasteners, and railroad spikes. In contrast, most of CSC’s pails are UN-rated and are mainly sold to customers that package solvents, adhesives, and general paint and coatings.

In reviewing Lancaster’s operations, we have determined that they are better equipped to produce only non-regulated pails. About 15 years ago, CSC made significant investments in machinery and technology to produce the highest-quality UN-rated pails in the industry. We call this our Triplex® Technology, which enables us to make a safer, stronger UN-rated steel pail.

For this reason, we have decided to transfer all of Lancaster’s UN-rated business to a CSC manufacturing plant.  This will allow Lancaster to focus on producing non-regulated pails and CSC to provide you with a Triplex® UN rated pail.

There are some minor differences between the Lancaster and CSC steel pail. The most significant difference is the exterior coating. Lancaster does not have a spray booth; therefore, they roll coat the exterior paint, which leaves a non-painted ear and side seam, vs. CSC, which sprays the exterior paint, which does coat the ears and side seam.

The other big difference is that all CSC’s UN pails are made with Triplex® Technology. This means that on an open head pail, the curl is a compound curl vs a standard curl and the bottom seam is a triple seam vs a traditional double seam.  On a tight head pail, the top and bottom seams are both triple seams.

Also, CSC is an UN-certified manufacturer rather than a third-party certification. This means that we are responsible for performing all of the required UN tests in accordance with the UN/DOT regulations for packaging and transportation of dangerous goods.

Starting this May, we will begin to transfer the UN pails and covers you purchase from Lancaster to a CSC plant. A CSC sales manager will contact you soon to discuss which CSC plant your business will be transferred to. CSC operates four manufacturing plants in Peotone, IL; Niles, OH; Quakertown, PA; and Kilgore, TX.

Your sales manager will send you updated CSC specifications and pricing for the items you buy for your review. We aim to make this transition as smooth as possible without supply interruption.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with me at droether@cscpails.com or 216-310-4041.

Kindly,

An Update on Pricing, Tariffs and Lead Times I want to share the latest developments in the US Cold Rolled (CR) steel market as we move through Q2 2025. After two straight quarters of pricing stability, volatility has returned and domestic steel prices have dramatically increased due to the steel tariffs implemented in March and April....

I want to inform you about a major shift in pricing for the US Cold Rolled (CR) steel market. As you know, on Monday, February 10th, President Trump announced sweeping tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum products, re-enacting a strategy from his first term that pleased domestic steel producers.
